Loudoun Watershed Watch
Overseeing the Water Resources of Loudoun County, VA

History and Mission

In 2000 volunteer monitoring groups and other concerned citizens began working with the Loudoun County Department of Building and Development (LCDBD) on issues that affected water quality. All parties recognized the need for cooperation to monitor and protect streams.

To solidify a partnership, the Loudoun County Cooperative Stream Monitoring Program (SMP) was formed and an MOU was signed in December 2000. The name of the organization was changed in April 2002 to Loudoun Watershed Watch (LWW). The first public information meeting was held in May 2001.

On April 7, 2010, LWW partners met and reviewed the draft revised MOU.

Mission

LWW's mission is to protect the water resources of Loudoun County through a synergy between citizens, private groups, county, and state agencies. In order to achieve this mission, LWW promotes:
  1. environmental stewardship,
  2. countywide stream monitoring,
  3. watershed management planning, and
  4. water quality and stream habitat protection and restoration.

LWW Goals and Objectives

The goal of the organization is: To develop a comprehensive cooperative program to monitor and protect the water resources of Loudoun County. This cooperative effort recognizes the strengths and past work of participating groups, and looks to enhance all contributions through the synergy of effective working relations among citizens of Loudoun County, private organizations, County personnel, and Federal and State agencies.

The objective of the organization is: To obtain and organize base-line water quality and quantity data on streams throughout Loudoun County to assess current conditions as well as to determine long-term trends. A countywide database will help evaluate and implement policies and procedures to mitigate impacts of land development and other land-use activities.

Another objective is: To educate the public about the County's water resources through user-friendly summary reports. The "State of Loudoun Streams: 2005" report helps achieve this objective.
