Scenic River

Virginia Scenic Rivers Program’s intent is to identify, designate and help protect rivers and streams that possess outstanding scenic, recreational, historic and natural characteristics of statewide significance for future generations. One of the program’s strengths is the partnership forged between citizens, local governments and the state. This partnership begins in the evaluation phase and continues through and after the designation process.

The Scenic River Program is detailed at: www.dcr.virginia.gov/recreational_planning/srmain.shtml

Catoctin Creek and Goose Creek -- Loudoun County is fortunate to have two scenic rivers. These were identified in the mid 1970's at a time when water supply dams were being considered for construction to serve Washington DC's growing population. Luckily these were designated as "Scenic" by Virginia and will be preserved in perpetuity.

Washington Post Article about Goose Creek -- In 1989, an article about "Development Tide Rises Near Goose Creek". Read the article.
